When icing or suspected ice is present, the airplane’s aerodynamics are degraded and lift margins are reduced. Limiting bank angle helps preserve controllability and stall margins while still giving enough roll authority to maneuver and respond to ice shedding or other unexpected conditions. Forty-five degrees is the chosen limit because it provides a workable balance: it allows a meaningful turn to maintain flight safety without pushing the airplane into higher load factors that ice-scarred wings may not sustain. Turning more steeply would demand significantly more lift and could push the aircraft toward a stall or loss of control in ice, while turns with far less bank would hinder maneuverability and obstacle clearance in icing conditions.
